Authorities have reported that two suspects, a 19-year-old Austrian and a 17-year-old Austrian, were planning a terrorist attack at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium. The main suspect intended to carry out an attack outside the stadium to cause maximum casualties using knives and explosive devices he had prepared. This threat led to the cancellation of three shows at the stadium, affecting nearly 200,000 fans. The targeted audience for the canceled concerts numbered more than 60,000 per show.
The arrest of the two suspects was made on Wednesday, August 6, following confirmation of the planned attack by government officials. Franz Ruf, Director-General for Public Safety in the Ministry of the Interior, emphasized the necessity of the cancellations for everyone’s safety. In response to the announcement, numerous concertgoers shared messages of support for the 34-year-old pop singer and each other on social media platforms. The solidarity displayed by the fan base was captured in various fan-captured TikTok videos.
The cancellation comes in the wake of a recent tragic event where three young girls were killed during a children’s Swift-themed dance and yoga class. The gravity of the situation is further underscored by Taylor Swift’s previous comments about her “fear of violence” impacting her personal life, made in March 2019.
