On June 4, 2019, US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump hosted a dinner at Winfield House for Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, during their state visit to London, England. This visit included lunch with the Queen, a State Banquet at Buckingham Palace, business meetings with the Prime Minister and the Duke of York, and a trip to Portsmouth to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
The former president, 78, was injured at a rally in Pennsylvania, where shots were fired in his direction. One person was killed, and two others were critically injured.
He is due to speak at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The contents of a private letter delivered to Prince Charles by the United Kingdom Prime Minister have not been disclosed, as the king, 75, is expected to maintain strict political neutrality.
The letter, delivered via the U.K. embassy in Washington, was declined by the palace. However, it is known that Prince Charles and Donald Trump have developed a “good working relationship” following Trump’s state visit to the UK in June 2019.
The UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, expressed shock at the scenes at President Trump’s rally and sent his best wishes for a speedy recovery to Trump and those injured. Starmer condemned political violence and extended his thoughts to all the victims of the attack.
