The Los Angeles Police Department announced the fitness icon’s passing on July 13. Richard Simmons was well-known for his contributions to the fitness and health industry. He gained popularity through workout videos and also established his own gyms.
He passed away at the age of 76 due to natural causes, just after his recent birthday celebration. Simmons moved to Los Angeles in the 1970s and developed an interest in fitness while working at a restaurant. He observed that existing gyms mainly catered to individuals who were already fit, which led him to open his own gym, “Slimmons,” aiming to welcome members of all fitness levels.
Apart from workout videos, Simmons’ public appearances on various TV shows and media platforms enhanced his fame. During the 80s, he released the popular exercise video series “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” and starred in his Emmy-winning television show from 1980 to 1984. His vibrant personality and distinctive fitness attire contributed significantly to the popularity of his workout videos.
Simmons was notably private about his personal life and did not publicly disclose his sexuality, leading to speculation from his fans. After 2014, he withdrew from public life, prompting rumors and conspiracy theories about his whereabouts. However, he occasionally reassured fans about his well-being through statements, expressing his desire for a peaceful and private life.
Simmons expressed his desire for privacy and peace, stating on social media that he has never authorized a movie about him and simply aspired to live a quiet life. Despite the absence of public appearances, he remained grateful for the love and support he received from his fans.
