On July 26, 2024, the Montparnasse train station in Paris, France experienced severe disruptions in France’s high-speed TGV network. These disruptions were attributed to “criminal actions” that occurred ahead of the Paris Olympic opening ceremony later in the day.
Officials reported that train traffic was greatly affected in Paris due to coordinated acts of sabotage on several lines the previous night. The SNCF described it as a “massive attack” which compromised the high-speed rail system, leaving thousands of people, including athletes, stranded.
Arsonists reportedly set up cables at three different locations around 4 a.m. local time. Major lines connecting Lille, Bordeaux, and Strasbourg with Paris were paralyzed, and a potential issue was also reported on the line between Paris and Marseille.
Prime Minister Gabriel Attal labeled these attacks as “acts of sabotage” and noted that they were “prepared and coordinated.” He stated that the arsonists had a “clear objective,” which was to “block the high-speed train network” just before the start of the Olympics.
No group took responsibility for these attacks. Acting French transport minister Patrice Vergriete called the disruption to train traffic an “outrageous criminal act” and emphasized that security teams were preparing for any other possible attacks.
Large crowds of affected passengers were observed at multiple train stations across France. Some passengers shared their experiences of being impacted by the travel disruption, expressing frustration and uncertainty about their travel arrangements.
In response to the disruptions, security forces were mobilized, and vigilance was increased. The authorities were employing various measures, including drones, to enhance security and address the situation.
