Imane Khelif, a 25-year-old female fighter from Team Algeria, faced off against Angela Carini from Team Italy in the Women’s 66kg preliminary round match at the Olympic Games Paris 2024. Despite reportedly having XY chromosomes and elevated testosterone levels, Imane was permitted to compete by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), despite not passing eligibility tests. During their match on August 1 at the North Paris Arena, Angela withdrew from the fight just 46 seconds in after receiving two hard punches to her face, which left her in tears and with a hurt nose. Post-match, Angela expressed her pain and explained that she felt unable to continue due to the severity of the injury.
Imane’s opponents had previously warned Angela about fighting her, and the situation raises questions about the rules and regulations surrounding eligibility and participation in sports competitions. It is worth noting that this incident sheds light on the complex issues surrounding gender and eligibility in sports, prompting discussions about fairness and inclusivity in athletic competitions.
