2 Officers Involved in Breonna Taylor Raid Have Felony Charges Dismissed

In Washington, DC, during the 2nd Annual Defend Black Women March in Black Lives Matter Plaza on July 30, 2022, a photo of Breonna Taylor was displayed among other photos of women who have lost their lives due to violence. This was a powerful demonstration of remembrance and solidarity. During a previous raid by the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department, it was alleged that two individuals submitted a false affidavit to search Taylor’s home.

As a result, charges carrying a maximum sentence of life in prison were brought against them. However, a ruling later reduced the civil rights violation charges to misdemeanors due to the judge’s conclusion that there was no direct link between the warrantless entry and Taylor’s death. The judge did not dismiss a conspiracy charge against one individual and another charge against the other person, who is accused of making false statements to investigators.

Additionally, the judge determined that the conduct of a third individual, who had fired at the police in response to the raid, became the legal cause of Taylor’s death. Following the incident, the individual who had fired at the police was arrested and initially faced attempted murder charges, which were later dismissed. It was alleged that his use of force was unconstitutionally excessive.

Another individual, who had fired multiple shots into Taylor’s home during the raid, will face a new civil rights trial in October following a deadlocked jury in his initial trial.
