Four people die in shooting at Georgia high school; suspect in custody

On September 4, 2024 in Winder, Georgia, a shooting occurred at Apalachee High School resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. The authorities have reported that a suspect is in custody.

At least nine people were hospitalized with injuries, with one flown by helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. The suspect, who is alive and in custody, is believed to be a student at Apalachee High School.

Law enforcement sources earlier reported that approximately 30 people were injured in the shooting. It remains unclear how many of those injuries were from gunshot wounds.

The shooting took place around 9:30 a.m. at Apalachee High School, a rural campus with around 1,800 students in grades nine through twelve, located approximately 50 miles from the center of Atlanta. Following the incident, the school was cleared for dismissal, while all other Barrow County schools were placed on a “soft lockdown” for the safety of everyone.

Witnesses at the scene described chaotic moments, with a 17-year-old student recounting how his teacher locked the door as they heard an active shooter. They huddled at the back of the classroom, hearing screams outside and someone pounding on the door, shouting to open up.

The situation escalated as more gunshots and screams were heard. The local authorities are continuing to investigate the situation to gather further details.
