Rebecca Cheptegei, a talented athlete from Uganda, tragically passed away on Thursday, September 5. Dr. Owen Menach confirmed her death, stating that she had suffered “full organ failure.” The Uganda Athletic Federation also released a statement expressing their deep sadness and condemning the domestic violence that led to her untimely demise.
The federation paid tribute to her remarkable accomplishments and called for justice as they honored her legacy and advocated for an end to gender-based violence. It was reported that on Monday, September 2, Cheptegei was attacked by her boyfriend following an argument. The Trans Nzoia County Police Commander, Jeremiah ole Kosiom, revealed that the couple had been quarreling outside their house, and the boyfriend was seen pouring a liquid on Cheptegei before setting her on fire.
Tragically, Cheptegei’s boyfriend also sustained severe burns during the incident, which was reportedly a dispute over land ownership. Earlier in the summer, Cheptegei participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics marathon and had previously achieved success in the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Thailand in 2022. Her passing is a profound loss to the athletic community, and her remarkable talent and perseverance will be remembered and celebrated.
In light of this tragic event, the Uganda Athletic Federation called for an end to domestic violence and extended their thoughts and prayers to those affected. They also provided information for confidential support for anyone experiencing domestic violence.
