Trump vs. Carroll: Examining the Ongoing Sexual Assault Case

E. Jean Carroll departed the Manhattan federal appeals court on September 6, 2024, following arguments in a judgement appeal brought by former US President Donald Trump. In January 2024, a New York jury ordered Trump to pay $83 million in damages to Carroll, who accused him of sexual assault. The jury deliberated for less than three hours before reaching its decision. During his presidency, Trump publicly demeaned Carroll for her allegation of a 1990s assault.

He appealed the 2023 civil jury verdict that found him liable for the abuse and defamation. In a separate case, a jury awarded Carroll $83.3 million for Trump’s defamatory statements made in 2019, which he also appealed. On September 6, 2024, Trump appeared in a New York City courtroom for the first time, after blaming his lawyers for the loss. The ongoing legal battle between Trump and Carroll is detailed in “A Modest Proposal,” published in *New York Magazine*.

Despite this, the Department of Justice continues to defend its position in federal court, while Trump has announced plans to appeal the decision.
