Joe Biden and Donald Trump participated in the CNN Presidential Debate at the CNN Studios in Atlanta, Georgia on June 27, 2024. Following a weak debate against Trump, the White House defended Biden’s position in the race, as he insisted he had no intention of dropping out.
However, Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race came weeks after multiple Democrats publicly called on him to step down. After Trump was shot during a rally in Pennsylvania, Biden spoke to the public and emphasized that political divisions should not incite violence in a tweet on July 21, 2024.
Despite his initial stance, Biden chose to step down from the presidential race, expressing that it was in the best interest of his party and the country in a public letter. He also thanked Vice President Kamala Harris and the American people for their support.
In his letter, Biden expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as President, and stated his intention to speak to the nation later in the week regarding his decision to withdraw from the race. He emphasized his belief in the strength of the United States and the importance of unity.
