Ryan Lochte spoke during a press conference at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Team Swimming Trials in Omaha, Nebraska. During the conference, a TikTok user’s question, “What do you mean you are not allowed to leave the Olympic Village?”
was directed to Lochte, who had remained off-camera. The question referred to the restrictions on leaving the Olympic Village, which Lochte seemed to be in violation of.
Lochte has a history with the Olympic Committee, having been involved in the ‘Lochtegate’ scandal during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. In that incident, he had falsely claimed that he and his teammates had been robbed at gunpoint at a gas station, leading to repercussions including a 10-month suspension and loss of sponsorships.
Although the charge against him was ultimately dismissed, Lochte faced scrutiny over inconsistencies in his account. He has since expressed regret and repeatedly apologized for his behavior.
